Ad Networks
An introduction to ad networks.
What is an ad network?
An ad network is a company that acts as a broker between web sites that want to advertise their site ("advertisers") and web sites that want to show ads those on their pages ("publishers"). The network will take a cut of your profits for doing this. The advantage for all those involved is that the whole program is outsourced so that you don't have to deal with the technology, operations, and relationships.
How to choose an ad network?
Choosing a good ad network requires a little bit of experience. As a beginner the best thing you can do is look for advice from other webmasters on internet forums. You should sign up for a few of the bigger programs and test them out and see which one is best. Some of the factors you should consider when choosing an ad network are: advertising rates, ad relevance, program type (PPC, pay-per-sale, etc), and reputation.
How to choose an ad network?
CPM (cost-per-impression) vs. CPC (cost-per-click) Campaigns - CPM pays per impression and CPC pays per click but all campaigns, even if it is not sold in CPM form, should be measured in CPM to be able to compare campaigns. CPC campaigns are good for targeted ads (such as Google AdSense) because these ads are relevant to the web page content and often related to the visitor's interest and get higher click-through rates. However, some advertisers are smart enough to sell their ads with low click-through rates in cost-per-click form and ads with higher click-through rates in cost per impression form that hurts the webmaster looking to make money.
