Backgrounds

A few things to think about when looking at backgrounds.

A good background is an easy way to give a Web site a much better look. It is quick to create one - you can simply type in a hex code for a background color or create a background gif for a solid color or pattern. The background color will be a major component of your overall color scheme and will increase your ability to brand your site.

It may benefit you to do some very light reading on basic color theory and the affect that different colors have on people's moods as well as what peoples' perceptions of each color are. For example, pink is considered to be a femenine color and hence it is used on many porn sites. Black has always been sort of a counterculture color so it works well with video game sites like gamespot.com and gamers.com. Red is looked at as an "exciting" color and it fits in nicely on sites like nerve.com and ilovejackdaniels.com. Yellow, orange, and purple are looked at as lighthearted colors used to convey fun - but not it they don't have the naughty reputation that red has. Purple works well on sites like dinis91.com and girl31.net. Blue seems to be a color without too many connotations and can be used in many different situations.

Many times the color scheme you use will correlate with the dominant colors of your subject matter. For example, green tends to be used on many poker sites and finance sites because it is the color of poker felt and money.
