What is Whois?
A searchable database which contains information about domain names and the contact information for the people that own them.

What are the valid characters for a domain name and how long can it be?
The only valid characters for a domain name are letters, numbers and a hyphen. Special characters like the underscore "_" or "&" are not permitted. Domain names cannot contain spaces or begin or end with a hyphen, "-". If a domain name does not have a Website, does that mean that it's not being used?
No, even if it does not have a website it could be used for e-mail or file storage.

Can I buy a name and just hold the name without having a website?
Yes. The average successful webmaster probably has only developed 10-20% of the domains he owns. The rest are for sites he will launch in the future and for sites he knows he will probably not even launch but will want the option to if he does.

What is ICANN?
ICANN is The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers and it is an internationally organized, non-profit organization that is responsible for managing domain names, including IP address allocation, and other responsibilities.
