There are sites that let you host a forum on their site for free . These forums are not looked at as high-quality sites so don't go this route - just spend the $50 per year for a decent hosting package and and get a free forum package like phpBB. Plus, you don't want someone else hosting your board because you will have less control over the board.

vBulletin is the best forum software available. It was written in PHP and MySQL as a backend. VBulletin has a very large user base and there are many hacks out there that are given away for free that can expand on it's already-broad set of features. A leased license is $85 per year and owned license is $160. phpBB is the best free forum software available. It is an open-source with a pretty decent admin capabilities. It is written in PHP and you can choose MySQL, MS-SQL, PostgreSQL or Access/ODBC as your backend databases. www.phpBB.com.



Invision Power Board, another good paid forum. A perpetual License is $185.00 which includes: One year of support and related services. After one year an optional $30 renewal for support and related services is available. You can get a Yearly License for $69.95 and that will give you a one year license to use Invision Power Board for one installation on all current and future versions.
