Internet Marketing Advice

This is an introduction to web marketing and some of the popular marketing methods.

Advice

  • Don't buy marketing "secrets". Stay away from websites that sell e-books touting web "Marketing Secrets" for $49.99 or whatever. There are no secrets to web marketing. There are general principles that are easy to learn. Spend some times on websites like this one to learn the fundamentals.

  • Dont "buy" traffic. You'll see banners on sites that claim they'll send you 10,000 visitors for $19.99. These are rip-offs. You won't get the traffic. And even if you did - which you won't - it will be low-quality, worthless traffic.

  • Don't spam. - Spamming is wrong. It will piss people off, and possibly get you in trouble with your ISP, hosting company, or affiliate program. And another big reason not to do it - it doesn't work. Unless you are sending out millions of e-mails very cheaply, it simply won't work. You should be trying to build a legitimate business that will be better than your competition instead of trying to find some tricky way to make money. Many people set up a bad website and then spam everyone trying to get successful the lazy way so they can sit around and not do work. If you build a great web site that people will want to go to and end up making good money then you can sit around all you want.

  • Your marketing should compliment your site - Your marketing "voice" should match your web site's personality. For example, if you portray yourself as a customer-friendly site that will give your visitors a pleasurable experience then you shouldn't have very aggressive marketing - like the way some sites send out unsolicited email newsletters or make it hard to get off mailing lists.
