Scripts
A discussion about what role scripts will play in your coding schedule.
What are scripts?
When you want to create a web site, or improve an existing one, you will want to add or enhance features on the site. These features - like feedback forms, guestbooks, message boards, counters, and content management systems - usually require advanced coding skills to create bug-free functional code. A beginning webmaster will not have the coding skills to do this and intermediate webmasters who could probably code the feature if they had to will want to look at getting a "script".When webmasters refer to scripts they are usually referring to free snippets of code available on the web that webmasters can download and plug into their site's code so their site can have that feature. Some scripts are big scripts like forum scripts (VBulletin or phpBB) and some are small scripts like a script for a poll or survey. Most scripts on the internet are free but some small coders may charge $20 to $30 for a script they wrote. There also may be businesses like VBulletin that charge $160 and run a business selling their scripts. If you are a webmaster that doesn't have much money to spend you should be able to get a script for any feature for free - even big scripts like forums and content management systems.
Even if you have the coding skills to code a script yourself you should find a script on the internet to use because those scripts have been time-tested and are usually bug-free and have advanced features that it would take someone quite a while to code. The exception to this rule is if you need some custom features you can't find in an off-the-shelf script. The best place to find a script for a particular feature is doing a Google search. The second best place to go would be the script sites like hotscripts.com.
It should be noted that even though using a script is the best option to add a feature to your page you still must understand the downside of using scripts. You are: 1. deciding to not learn how to code a backend and not have the skills needed to solve the problems yourself. 2. putting the creation of the code in someone else's hands and give up control. 3. possibly going to have to pay money to fix the code quickly if something goes wrong. I'm not saying that going with a script is a bad decision to make - scripts are some of the best resources you will have - I am just saying make sure you know the upside and downside when you decide to outsource coding.

Contracting Coders
There may be times when you need a very specific feature on your site and there is no generic script at Hotscripts or the other scripting sites. Therefore you must contract a code to write custom code for you. The sites you would go to in this case would be the coding contractor sites where you can post a job for a set amount of money and have coders bid on them. You can usually get jobs done very cheaply because many of the coders are in poorer countries and will do the job for little money. When using these sites you do run the risk of having a coder do a sub-par job at coding or not finishing the job at all. But these sites can be a great resource. You would be amazed at what you can get for $50 on rent-a-coder. Many of the coders there bascially are people who have solved your problem before (for someone else) and already have the code available to do what you need to do. Either that or they are highly skilled and can do a job in a couple of hours when it might take you a month to do it.
You can also pick a coder from one of the webmaster forums to do a job for you. This is a choice that is gaining popularity but you need to be very careful when you do this because you don't have the feedback mechanisms that rent-a-coder has so you may not know the reputation of the coder you are doing busines with. Some people advise to meet people face-to-face for contracting coding and stay within a local market and get referrals if you can.
