A guide to using templates for web site design.
Using design templates is an easy way to get a web site up and running because you don't have to plan or fiddle with how the web site will look. If you know nothing about coding then getting a template to get your site up quickly can be one of the smartest moves that you can make.In the time that it takes you to learn how to code and design you may have lost out on profits, or, if you have a new concept, someone else may have come in and gotten a lead on you. Although most webmasters take pride in designing their own pages and look down on template designs, the opportunity cost of sitting around for weeks or months trying to come up with a good design can be huge. Considering that there are many decent designs out there for $10-$50, getting a template and saving a few months of frustrating and wasted time could be a smart move.
It also helps out you psychologically because it will make you feel like you are making progress towards launching your page. If you decide later that that you can do a better design job then you can do a redesign after you get all the content done and the site starts growing. I would recommend staying away from Flash templates as a beginner.
If you have coding experience and a good eye for design then you won't have to be resigned to using a template. I would say that 95%-99% of design templates have a standard look but if you look hard enough though you can find some that have a unique design. Personally, I think that the quality of web design templates will be getting better and better in the future because there is a big market for cheap web site design.
